Do you ever watch your pet while they sleep? Do you notice tail wags, twitching, and fluttering eye movements while they're in a deep slumber?

Cat and dog owners everywhere witness their pets reacting to their dreams on a consistent basis. Whether your cat swats in the air or your dog starts to quietly bark in their sleep, these are sure signs that they are dreaming of something. Many scientists agree that there is evidence to support the notions that cats and dogs dream. In fact, every mammal that has been studied does experience dreaming!

Similar to humans, cats and dogs experience two main types of sleep: rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and slow wave sleep (SWS).

During both types of sleep, the brain processes the information it learned that day. At some point during sleep, the dreaming process takes over. This is when you will see the physical signs that your cat or dog is deep in their own dream world. Adult dogs and cats spend approximately 10-12% of their slumber in the REM sleep stage. Puppies and kittens spend a much greater portion of their sleep time in the REM stage because they have tons of new data to process as they're exploring and learning about the world around them.

In addition, the part of the brain linked to memory storage was studied and the results are shocking! The brain activity during the day and while asleep was so similar that the scientists were able to identify where in the dream maze the rodents were. This concludes that the rats were recalling their memories in their dreams, which is very similar to the human dreaming process.

That puppy will be a fully-grown dog someday, and it's important to start early to give it the building blocks to be a well-behaved and reliable companion.

What should you be thinking about when you bring your new friend home?

Training

One of the most time-consuming things about a puppy is the need for training. It's best to start early in teaching your new friend what to expect. You will need to train your dog how to signal you when it's time to go outside, how to respond to commands, and how it will be expected to behave in the house. Here are some tips to keep your pet safe this summer.

For us humans, laying out in the summer sun can be the perfect way to spend a hot July afternoon. However, our furry companions may not feel the same way. It is very easy to forget that our pets do not regulate their body temperatures in the same way that we do. So while certain heat may feel slightly uncomfortable to us, it can be downright dangerous for our pets.

It may seem glaringly obvious, but furnishing your pet with a cool shaded area can make a world of difference. This accompanied with abundant fresh drinking water can help ensure that they do not succumb to the amplified summer heat. Although mindfulness and attention to your pet is an absolute must! Check in on your pet periodically. Do not leave them unattended in hot confined spaces. And remember that no one knows your pet better than you do. If your feline/canine companion is showing signs of distress, address it immediately.
